Page 22 — White Day

Translator's notes: White Day is March 14th. It's a chance for males to give a gift to females and return any favours from Valentine's Day. Just like on Valentine's, there are gifts for that special female, and then the obligation gifts, given to friends or as a social courtesy. Typically, sweets, biscuits and marshmallows are given.

In the English release, Maya is fond of burgers, whereas in the Japanese version, her preferred food is miso ramen, hence the ramen extravaganza.

hamidashi Info Corner

On 4th February, the international launch of Ace Attorney DS was announced in Las Vegas! Immediately, producer Ms Matsukawa received comments in Dorimaga. "Because it's a text-based game, I thought that the localisation and translation and so on would be difficult. But Ace Attorney is an adventure game that can be appreciated all over the world. I kept that challenge in-house. I had various worries about Naruhodo-kun's English name, but because he makes so many comebacks, we decided on a name with that connotation: Phoenix (fushichou). We also had to include various instruction manuals for the DS." (Matsukawa)

White Day — At the Wright & Co. Law Offices

To follow on from last month's issue's "Valentine's Day", this month's story is "White Day". What will the three friends — Phoenix, Miles and Larry — remember about the White Days of their childhood? Will a shock run through their recollections this time too?!

maya Wooooooo. I'm stuffed!

larry So how was it? My Ramen First Course.

Maya: Hmm. Completely delicious!

Larry: Darn right! Edgey! Say something, can't you?!

Edgeworth: . . . All I can say is that it's something of a delicacy.

Larry: We'll start with miso ramen salad relish, miso ramen tenpura, and miso stewed veal garnished with ramen.

Maya: And the main dish is, of course — miso ramen!

Larry: Say, for dessert — how about miso-sherbet ramen!

Maya: Eeeeeeeee!!!

Phoenix: Uhh... what are you doing, Larry?

Larry: You idiot! I bet you don't even know what day it is today!

Maya: Hey, I even received a marshmallow from Mr Edgeworth!

Phoenix: Ahh, well. It's White Day, isn't it?

Larry: Then! Are you making fun of my White Day girl?

Phoenix: M-Maybe there isn't such a person?

Maya: Why, it seems there are some unpleasant memories there, Nick.

Phoenix: Well, I don't like it. I received a sweet from Edgeworth that day.

maya Ehhhhhhhhh?! N-N-Nick and P-P-Prosecutor Edgeworth — !!!

larry Hohhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! S-Sorry, Nick! I had no idea that's how it went!

edgey S-Stop saying things that lead to such misunderstandings!

Maya: Well then, tell us about it this month, too!

Phoenix: . . . At primary school, there was a girl I liked. Rumi-chan, her name was.

Larry: Say, Nick. Did you really like this girl?

Phoenix: Dipstick, last month you were surprised, too.

Maya: Calm down, guys, it's okay. So then what?

Phoenix: It was White Day morning. On this girl's desk, I left a sweet. My courage left me, so I attached a message to it.

Edgeworth: You? To Rumi-chan?

Phoenix: So on that day, after lunch, Edgeworth arrived, holding that sweet.

Young Edgeworth: "She said she can't accept this."

Maya: Ahh. That's pretty pathetic, huh.

Phoenix: Well, without a shadow of a doubt, she rejected me.

Edgeworth: . . . You say that, but...

Maya: What do you mean, Mr Edgeworth?

Edgeworth: This story. There was a shadow of a doubt. It was such a tiny detail.

Larry: Yo dude, don't be bothering with it. It's all such a long time ago.

Phoenix: No way! I want to know. Edgeworth, tell me!

Edgeworth: It's such a simple thing. The girl who asked me to return the sweets to you wasn't "Rumi-chan".

Phoenix: Huh?

Maya: Well then, who was it?

Edgeworth: As I recall, it was "Fumi-chan".

Phoenix: F-Fumi-chan? But why that girl..?

Edgeworth: Think back properly, Wright. What exactly happened that morning?

Phoenix: That day, I came to school early. I brought the sweets in with me... that's it! I tried to find Rumi-chan's seat.

Maya: No way, Nick. You didn't even know which seat the girl you liked sat in?

Phoenix: But they'd just done a seating change. Larry... as I recall, it was you I asked.

Larry: Eh?! What? Oh... Umm, w-was it?

Edgeworth: That time, Larry, it seems you heard wrong and mistook "Rumi-chan" for "Fumi-chan".

phoenix Arghhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

edgey And that's why you're so surprised, Larry. All this time, you thought the girl Wright liked was Fumi-chan.

larry . . . Oh. Dang.

Maya: It would have been better if Fumi-chan just returned the sweets to Nick herself.

Edgeworth: She asked me to do it, because I was on the class committee.

Phoenix: L-LARRY!!! Y-Y-YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!

Larry: Yo, dude, Fumi-chan was definitely more of a catch!

Phoenix: That's no excuse!

Maya: But — well, you know, life is a mystery after all.

Phoenix: What do you mean?

mayaNick, who couldn't even be satisfied after swapping his chocolates, is now swapping his whole existence.

Larry: Oh, definitely!

phoenix ...With the way this went, I don't think there is a fitting conclusion, Maya.
