koi nante kitto ichido mo shite wa inakatta
I've certainly never been in love
suki janaitte kitzuku made
I've tried to be in love,
suki ni narou to shite ta dake
Until I realise that I'm not

I've certainly never been in love

I found this on Ten Tobata's channel, except he didn't say where it was from, or even if it was official or fan-made. Anyway, my sensei, Yuki-san, hunted it down for me, without even being asked, I might add, because she's awesome like that. It's fan-made, after all. It's actually quite a sweet scene, at least this version. I've transcribed and translated the lyrics for you, which took me ages, because some of those kanji are complex, yet too blurry to make out, but I managed it eventually. As always, my knowledge of Japanese is limited, so there may be mistakes. Also, I've never watched Frozen, so there may be context stuff I've missed. Anyway, here is the video for anyone else who was looking for the Kansai/Osaka dialect version of this song. The singer also did the full song here.
Purple is Anna's lines, blue is Elsa's.
mamotte morawande ee nen. Uchi wa daijoubu ya!
You don't need to protect me. I'm okay!
naa, erusa, ikan totte... naa!
Hey, Elsa, don't go...! Hey!
This is the 1997 version. Changes are highlighted in mermaid turquoise. I wasn't happy about removing the ね from the first line, because it takes it further away from the English "isn't it neat?", but more than that, I wanted to keep the rhyme, so change it did. Disclaimer: I'm not a native speaker, nor fluent in Japanese in any sense of the word.
you mitemi, mecha suteki
Have a look at this. It's so wonderful!
kore de motto kanpeki
This is even more perfect.
nandemo mottennen atashi wa subete
I have everything, I have it all.
This is my Japanese version of Delta Goodrem's Not Me, Not I. Lyrics by me, with corrections by my good friend Yuki-san. Instrumental here:
VERSE Yowatteku yorimo mushiro tsuyoku natteru |
VERSE Rather than getting weaker, I am getting stronger. |
| No, you broke my heart, but I'll be okay. |
I seem to have this terrible habit of killing off my protagonists' parents (count: 5/6 protagonists so far). Since Kiki has a song mourning the loss of her father, I thought it would be nice for Clarys to have a song too. Evil. I have no creativity: Clarys and Kiki both lost their mothers when they were babies, and then their fathers when they were children. I'm terrible.
Because I cannot compose melodies to save my life, I used this lovely lullaby sung by the amazing Erika Ferris. I hope it is not considered disrespectful to compose alternative lyrics for a traditional folk song.
Now I have a feeling my lyrics have grammatical/vocab mistakes in them. If any of them are a case of "This REALLY doesn't mean what you think it means," please do correct them. If, however, they can be excused by poetic licence and/or that fact that this song would have been written by a ten year old girl, please do so! Writing lyrics in a language you are not proficient in is hard enough, but to get them to fit to a melody is even harder. So please don't rain on my parade except to save me from looking stupid. If you want to record these, it's fine, but be sure to check with a native speaker that the lyrics are okay before you do 🙂
I might draw a picture to go with this, but it's been a super long time since I drew a proper piece, so I dunno.

Hoshi o miagete, futari de yozora o mitsumeta to omoidashite, kokoro ga itai. |
I look up at the stars, and I remember how the two of us would watch the night sky together, and I feel a pain in my heart. |
Hoshi no katachi wa ai no nagare o tadoru deshou ka? Namida tsugi tsugi chiru. |
Will the pattern of the stars trace the flow of my love? My tears fall one by one. |
Ima, shizukesa ni hitori de tatteru. Namida ni hoshiakari ga zutto utsuru. |
Now I stand alone in the silence. My tears will forever reflect the starlight. |

Namida ni watashi no ai ga zutto utsuru. |
My tears will forever reflect my love. |

I feel as if I'm forever upon a wave of the deepest blue And as my imagination soars, the hated changes around me become fleeting. |
This was inspired by the scene in Last Window, where Kyle's mother would look out the window while this song played. Kyle's losing of his father reminded me of Kiki's losing Callimachus, so I wrote some lyrics to match. I used this as an illustration in Dreamsong chapter 5, although the sentiment is more matched to a scene in chapter 4.

I've finally updated the image to match the lyrics. However, there just isn't enough space for the full version with the additional chorus. But the rest of it matches.

I know there are a few of these floating about the interwebz, but this is my translation practice. I'm still a beginner, so the translation is probably very literal and full of mistakes. I'm happy for anyone to tell me where and why I've gone wrong and so on. Enjoy!
