What is This Book? — (Re)Create This Book Pt 3

I haven't really done any work on this for a while. See how easily I get bored of projects? So I thought I may as well post my last entries since it may be a while till I do any more.

So here is "Create Hope". Of course, I thought of Star Wars: A New Hope, so I drew moisture-farmer Luke. This was a really hard one. I'm not good at realistic portraits. I had to use the grid method, but even then, his left-eye was so hard to draw. No matter what I did, it always looked wrong. So I quit before I made it any worse. It didn't help that in the source image, Leia's bun was super-imposed over the left-hand side of Luke's face.

I mean to seal this as it's soft pencil and I don't want it smudging, but I can't think of any way to incorporate the fruit rule without cheapening the picture, so I may have to break the rule in this one case.

Next is "Create an Upside Down Drawing". I drew a sloth. I mean to paint this with watercolour, as I've finally dug up my drawing pens, but the Luke picture is on the following page, and I'm so scared I'm going to manage to spill the paint onto it.

That's all I have for now.

Jumping the Snark

In fact, I finished reading the Naruto manga a few weeks ago, but then I got a nasty cold, and then I decided to play Etrian Odyssey again, and I don't even know why I found it so hard the first time, because it wasn't harder than any other RPG, and then I decided to get a move on with the Gyakuten Saiban translations. I should have posted this earlier while it was still fresh in my memory, but shaanai naa, what can you do?

i am madara
I guess I'm Madara. Reality is way over-rated.

So... I was disappointed. An awful lot of sharks were jumped. It felt like Kishimoto went "Oops! I've just OP'd Madara, what should I do? I know! Let's power up Naruto and Sasuke! Akan! I've OP'd the boys now... What should I do? I know, I'll make Madara more powerful. Oh, damn —" etc etc. So many sharks were jumped, so many. I really preferred Part 1 to Part 2. As the series progressed, it became more and more about...

Prequels Review and Fix

My old review was a bit of an incoherent mess, so I've fixed it up, and also FIXED THE PREQUELS. You're welcome! Okay, so there are things about the prequels I hate that others seemed to like, and vice versa, so all I can say is I've fixed the prequels to my taste. Okay, here we go!

We'll start with the things I liked.

The Good

Qui-Gon Jinn

Okay, so I did mention in my other post that I enjoyed Episode I. It was good. I especially loved Qui-Gon, he's just such a wholesome character, probably my favourite Jedi. I really like the idea of a chaotic good Jedi.

The Memes

I really only watched it for the memes.

The World-Building

I loved how much more fleshed out the Star Wars universe became. Even if others didn't like the politics, I really loved that side of it. A big complaint I had about the OT was that we didn't get to see what life was like for those living under the Empire (remember, Tatooine was ruled by the Hutts, the Empire hadn't bothered with it just yet). So for me, the world-building of the prequels really brought the whole galaxy to life. It's still stupid that every planet only has one biome (Tatooine = all desert, Hoth = all tundra, Naboo = all beautiful temperate forest, Dagobah = all swamp, etc etc), and though it does bug me that they all have Earth-gravity, I do get the limitations of filming, so I'll give them a pass on the gravity issue.

Now onto the things I didn't like. Plus, I'm fixing them to make them more appealing to me. For the record, this is not the same as my alternate universe headcanon, which uses Episode IV's original plot as a starting point. This is just my fix for the official canon prequels. Now really, buckle up, it's a long ride! Continue reading

Echo Base, This is Rogue Two. I’ve Found Them. Repeat, I’ve Found Them.

Topps Vader and Luke trading cards

Eeeeeeeee! I found them in an organiser pocket, buried right at the bottom of my wardrobe! I'm so glad I found them! I didn't even remember having a Vader card, just the Luke one. And yep, that was the picture. I was wrong about it being portrait, though. Eeeeee! I was so happy when I saw it!

So the cards themselves are from a series of 10. Vader is Continue reading

Star Wars: The Black Series Figurines

I've been looking at these for a while. Since I don't really have anything else to spend all my savings on, I decided I may as well treat myself and indulge my fangirlism. I bought the Luke Dagobah figure (it seems there is... another version of this also that has Yoda and the backpack, but it was unavailable when I was shopping). Its face sculpt seemed the best out of the ESB Lukes, otherwise I would have got the Bespin Luke. Impressed by the quality, I decided to buy the other two Skywalkers. Leia is TINY next to Vader.

Anyway. I have lots of photos. Lots and lots of photos. Enjoy!

I Watched Project 4K77

Project 4K77 is a restoration project of the original cinematic cut of Star Wars (now Episode IV). I was really curious about it, so I found a copy, which took me a full 4 days to download and the resulting 24GB file was too big for my old netbook to handle, so I spent another 3 days trying to burn it to DVD, which failed, but I did get a working 4.2GB VOB file, so eventually I got to watch it! I've since put it through HandBrake to get a 720p at 3.98GB. And yes, it took literally days.

My computer is so slow!

The image quality was really good. One thing that stood out the most was Luke's hair colour was consistent. It bothered me on the DVD release that his hair would range from honey blond to dark brown from scene to scene. In this one, his hair colour stays within the honey blond range. Comparing the DVD to 4K77 side by side, you can really see the difference.

Star Wars Memes

lucas, joineth me on the dark side
A similar meme already exists, but I couldn't find a high quality image, so I remade and expanded it, complete with the missing hand. I was trying to think of a more archaic way to say "that's not true" and ended up messing up the quote in this roundabout way. Sorry.

DisneyLucasFilm.... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy.

I Watched All the Prequels and Rogue One

Okay, I did it. I'm not sure if I'm glad I watched the prequels or not. I will say that I really enjoyed Rogue One; I'd say it's right up there with the OT (you see, DisneyLucasfilm, you can produce quality films when you try).

Rogue One was a little confusing at the start. I wasn't quite sure what was going on and who was who, but that might be partly because I was sold a defective disc, so it kept skipping for many scenes early on. But once I got past that, I found the characters interesting, and the storyline compelling — even though I knew the Death Star plans would make it to Leia.

My Headcanon for the Star Wars Sequels

I'll just say now, I don't consider Disney's crappy attempt at fanfiction to be canon at all. Besides anything else, to write fanfiction, you have to be, well, a fan, right? This is more like spitefiction.

Anyway, I came across this on YouTube, and was really impressed! There is one point in particular in the analysis that I disagree with: I don't think Han's character was handled well at all. It seems they've just completely undone all his development over the OT, and turned him into a deadbeat dad and useless husband. Nope, that's not Han.

disney lucasfilm: you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy
Disney: crapping on the Star Wars legacy one OT character at a time.

Regards to the rewrite, I'm basically accepting this as canon. A couple of things, though. I think Luke's coldness to Rey should have been more subtle. Have it so that Luke's making an effort to be encouraging, but that both Rey and the audience can see it's not genuine. Luke just being outright cold to her whole life would basically make Luke a bully, even emotionally abusive. Luke wouldn't behave like that. He'd at least try, if for nothing else than to stop her developing negative feelings that would lead her to the dark side.

Also, the Yuuzhan Vong have apparently been around for like over 50 years, but only attack now. There doesn't seem to be an explanation for why they hung around so long before attacking, especially as they could have attacked right after Return of the Jedi, when the Empire was on its last legs and the New Republic hadn't had time to get started and build up a navy.

I would also have liked Mara Jade and Ben Skywalker to have been in this, even if they were killed off before the story started. We need more Mara Jade!

Anyway, enough complaining. Despite these bugbears, I loved this rewrite, it's my headcanon for the sequel. I'd love the creator to pair up with a writer and make a full 3 part novelisation!

PS. No I haven't watched the Disney trilogy, I have no intention of doing so. I don't need to taste a dog turd to know I won't like it. I already dealt with crappy sequels and beloved original franchise characters being ruined when I played Apollo Justice, and it was even worse than I'd thought. I had to headcanon Phoenix into someone called Bob (not Bob Loblaw, sadly) and I'm not paying Disney money to do the same for Luke Skywalker Jake Greenmilker. I get way too overinvested in fictional characters; I know my limits!

Here are some more links for why DT Bad and DNW:

  3. Even Mark Hamill hates the Disney Trilogy

Okay the prequels seem kinda crap, and mess with my AU headcanon, but it also sounds like 6 hours of non-stop memes, so I'm feeling kinda tempted!

Edit: I did it (dew it!). I bought the prequels. I've watched Episode I, and I liked it. Not a patch on the OT, but it was still good. Even Jar Jar wasn't as annoying as I expected. But then I live with 3 little kids who watch PJ Masks and Masha. I have a high tolerance for OTT annoying kids show characters. Actually, not true. I hate Masha with a passion. Jar Jar > Masha for sure.

Create Your Own Trading Card Game

The kids have been getting super frustrated during lockdown, and tantrums and general bad behaviour are on the increase. So here's an idea I thought of to encourage good behaviour, and give me something to occupy my time too.

It all started with The Missing Luke Skywalker Trading Card. I had one of these when I was about 14 or 15. I may have kept it in my Sonic the Hedgehog ringbinder, and it may not be there anymore, and I may be really sad about that.

So to cut a long story short, I decided that since I'll probably never find The Missing Luke Skywalker Trading Card, why not just make my own? In fact, why not just make my own series and hope Disney doesn't sue me for everything I have?

Just bear in mind, unless you're using either your own photos/images or images you have permission to freely distribute, these need to be for personal use only. No sharing among school-friends or the kids on the street. Hence I will not be uploading the files, but I will tell you an easy and cheap way to make your own!
