Page 16 — Reminiscence 2

Notes: Maya tries to say "Merry Christmas" in English, but she says it the kana way.

Thanks to Hikari Kaitou for corrections. Thank you to u/Evelinessa for pointing out that the card Franziska was returning was de Killer's card from Gyakuten Saiban 2. Neither Hikari nor I picked up on that!

Episode 5 — January 2005 Issue

Takushuu Column — Ace Attorney 2

"Let's get straight to AA3!"

When the producers decided to continue with the series, I was so grateful.

To be honest, at the time we launched AA1, I was kinda half-hearted about a sequel. I couldn't think at all of making anything beyond the first game.

But I'm truly glad that they pushed me to give it a go. The end result was that we didn't give in to the challenges AA1, and the work was completed.

But for AA2, it was a big point of reflection on a personal level.

. . . it's desperately difficult...

Recently, when I tried to play it again after a long while, I got stuck a lot of times.

How can I put this? Rather than "This is hard!", it was more, "This is cruel!"

I kinda lost my temper!

When we made it, we were confident that "this level [of difficulty] is enough!", but how did you guys find it?

When I wrote the script for AA2, I really got into the swing of things. I was so upbeat.

I finished writing the scripts with such vigour, it was a work I could be really proud of, with one exception.

Continuing from last month, I'll show you that one exception.

"Farewell, My Turnabout".

For the composition of the story itself, I couldn't think of anything. No matter how much I wrote and wrote, nothing came to me.

On top of that, it was long to the point of being overwhelming... In the end, I have a memory of finishing up that feels like murky water.

What's with all these emotional ups and downs with this production?

But now, when I re-read it... it seems pretty silly.

How about you guys?

That's all for now. See you next month!

Laurice Deauxnim vs Phoenix Wright Compilation

This time we show you a conversation between the two best friends. Please have fun in the world of art! (—Takumi)

[Note: "kara genki" means "putting on a brave face". Larry uses "karaa (colour) genki" instead. I had to take liberties to make the pun work.]

Laurice: It's a tough time, Nick. Let's get through it by putting on a colourful face! The night I got slapped by Naomi, by putting on a colourful face, I...

Phoenix: Hold up, Larry. What's a "colourful face"?

Laurice: Are you an idiot or what? I'm deciding on the the colour of my spiritual energy! We all have one, right? You can't get through something like this in just black and white!

Phoenix: . . . It's "putting on a brave face"! What the heck kind of colour is your spiritual energy then?

Laurice: Like this, man! Since you're asking... what kind of colour is between crimson lake and yellow? If I had to choose, I'd say it's something other than yellow, huh?

Phoenix: (It's orange.)

• I bought the October issue just for Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban!, but I really enjoyed the other interesting articles! (Shiitake, Shiba Prefecture)
~ Thank you for noticing the other articles! There's still more to come here!

• The Naruhodo Gyakuten Saiban! pages in Dorimaga's December issue were the best! Phoenix, Edgeworth and Maya's exchanges and the illustration just melted my heart. This is unrelated, but, thanks to Ace Attorney, whenever anything set in a courtroom comes up on the news or a TV drama, it really catches my eye. (Kazu Totoro, Hyougo Prefecture)
~ Are there any more readers who notice "defence lawyers" and "prosecutors" when they come up on TV?

• I really hope you make a special edition book for these! (T.T, Kanagawa Prefecture)
~ It'll be great if we can continue this long enough to make a book!

Reminiscence 2 — At the Wright & Co. Law Offices

At the Wright & Co. Law Offices, the cousin-duo, Maya and Pearl, are proposing a Christmas get-together. People they hadn't seen for a long time have invited themselves. Will the famous scene from Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 2 come to a conclusion?!

Phoenix: Hey, Maya. What's all this?

Maya: Get with the game, Nick! We're working out which type of ramen to use, of course! Duh!

Phoenix: Wh-what?! Why on Earth would you put ramen on top of a cake?!

Maya: Wow, Nick. As usual, you're far behind the times. Hey! Pearly!

Pearl: We're doing research about cakes for today's special occasion!

Maya: We've been going round to loads of cake shops, see!

Phoenix: ...So what do you call this cake you're making?

maya It's a Mont Blanc. You put ramen and sweet chestnuts on top.

pearl Mystic Maya and I worked together, and put a lot of hard work into making this!

Maya: ...Well, that's true, but do you think maybe ramen and sweet chestnuts don't really go well together?

Pearl: After all, Mystic Maya, there was that one made with buckwheat noodles.

Maya: Perhaps you were right all along, Pearly... By the way, it would be great if Santa would arrive soon!

Phoenix: Santa..? You called him over today? Are you sure it wasn't Edgeworth?

Maya: Well, duh! That's Santa! I mean, he wears the same-ish colour clothes as Santa, doesn't he?

Phoenix: Y-You think so? Isn't his shade a little... gloomy for Santa?

maya Oh it's fine, it's fine. It just means this Santa's a little worn out from city life.

phoenix Well... he may not look it, but I guess he's a hard worker, that Santa.

Maya: Yeah, Santa is on his way here with his reindeer pulling his sleigh!

Pearl: Oooooh I can't wait! Santa!!!

...Swish! Yelp! Swish! Yelp!

Maya: Hey, hey it looks like they're here! I can hear the noise of Santa cracking his whip at the reindeer as they pull his sleigh!

Phoenix: ...But the cries of the reindeer sound rather ghastly, don't they?!

Gumshoe: Ow! Owww! Not another! S-S-Someone help me, pal! *Yelp!*

Pearl: Oh! It's Detective Reindeer!

Gumshoe: Hey, pal, no! I'm Detective Gumdeer... I mean Rainshoe... No no, I mean Shoegum! *Yelp*

franziska MERRY X'mas... Mr Phoenix Wright.

phoenix ...I would really appreciate it if you didn't look at me like that, Ms Franziska von Karma.

Pearl: Hey, Mystic Maya. Did you invite these two, too?

Maya: I-I don't know...

Franziska: ...I have to come to inspect whether or not the judiciary in this country maintains order, and manages things properly.

Maya: Merii kurisumasu, Ms Franziska!... *Youch!*

franziska ...Your pronunciation is terrible. It's "MERRY".

Gumshoe: This has been absurd right from the very beginning. Ha ha ha..! *Yelp!*

Maya: ...So what brings you here today, Franziska?

Franziska: ...I'm here to return your lost item to you. It's been quite the eyesore for some time.

Phoenix: My lost item?

franziska A Christmas card... Perhaps you could say a memory? It's been difficult to find other opportunities to bring it here.

maya Ah! That's..!

Phoenix: What is it, Maya? Show me, too, won't you?

Maya: M-Maybe later... And what about Prosecutor Edgeworth..?

Gumshoe: He'll be here very soon, pal. He's just got something he needs to finish checking first.

Phoenix: Good grief... That's so typical of that guy.

Pearl: Come on, everyone! The Mont Blanc is ready! Come and eat it!

gumshoe Hey! Cake! Cake! Wow, it's been ages since I ate one of those, pal!

Franziska: This Mont Blanc looks very nice. I'll be honoured to eat some.

Maya: ...Huh? Nick?! Where are you going?

Phoenix: I'm going out to find Edgeworth... Besides which, I don't want to be on the receiving end of Franziska's whip.
