Farewell, My Gameboy

RIP my GBA SP.

Remember I was all, “Yays! I have the same GBA as Edgey!”? Well, I violated my one cardinal rule: if you don’t want something to get broken, don’t let the kids touch it.

Tiny has recently become obsessed with playing Sonic Advance (she’s an Amy fangirl like I was). And so far, it had been fine. She’d play the first level, then put it away. I don’t know what happened this time.

The Chipmunk and I were playing Recipe for Turnabout (more on that later), and Tiny came up to me saying something, and the next thing the GBA was on the floor. I told her to be careful in case she breaks it, and lo and behold, there it is shattered.

She didn’t even drop it from a height, and it fell on the carpet, but that was enough. RIP my Edgey GBA 🙁

I tried putting the pieces back together, but the hinge would catch, so I resisted the temptation to keep going, because I seem to remember hearing that that ribbon connecting the screen is delicate. On the plus side, the screen was still on after it smashed, so I’m guessing the electronics are fine, and I’ve watched enough Odd Tinkering to know you can buy a new case, so I think it’s still salvageable. But it was my pink Edgey GBA, man. I still have my Kei-chan’s savegame from Gyakuten Saiban 3 on there. We played a bit of Feenie’s case on the bus home. It was the first time she ever played a GS game, even though it was already very famous when she was still living in Japan. I’ve had that GBA longer than the kids have been alive.

Speaking of which, my budgie turned 12 this month! Happy Hatchday, my little idiot!

He’s obsessed with my fingers. I had to make a cover for the sleep and power buttons, because he keeps messing around on the keyboard when I’m trying to type, then powering off my netbook.

Luckily, Techie Uncle is really into electronics these days, so I’m hoping he’ll be able to rescue it. Unfortunately, he lives up in the Midlands, and I haven’t been up there since I was a teenager. I’m still waiting until I can get my Tamagotchi Music Star to him, because they use those piddly liitle screws that are impossible to open.

At least I still have my old-skool GBA. The Chipmunk and I played a bit of Larry’s case from GS1, because I wanted to show him how Phoenix’s finger does the waggle in the original GBA’s pointing sprites. I don’t know why they got rid of it in the DS port.

Anyway, the Chipmunk was very interested in how the game managed to be playable without a touchscreen. I was surprised at how much of the text I was able to understand this time round, so slight morale boost for me, yay! I am actually making progress in Japanese.

Backtracking a bit, the Chipmunk came up to see me when I was a few minutes into Recipe for Turnabout, and he’s now a Phoenix Wright fanboy. He’s actually seen me play bits and bobs of the trilogy, but he’s only caught the fanboy bug now. He’s always coming up to me asking if I’m playing Phoenix Wright. So I let him play Larry’s case from AA1, since it was before Mia became bless-your-outfit. That was just before Tiny smashed the GBA, so I’m going back to my one cardinal rule and banning the kids from my devices. Anyway, he somehow managed to complete the case without actually knowing what happened, because he hates reading and just skips through all the text. I let him and Tiny watch a bit of the anime, and now Tiny is a Lotta Hart fangirl, too, and she asked me if I can make Lotta’s outfit for the dress-up dollies (I’d already made Lotta’s afro).
