Supermarket Vegan Megapost!

There are so many vegan options in supermarkets now. Here's a rundown of some of the ones I've tried.

Falafel

Lidl Falafel

I've been having these Lidl falafels on my lunch break for a few months now. They're really nice. They're quite oniony, but it's not overpowering. I'm not sure what style they're meant to be. They're from the chilled section. They're £1.25, which is a really good price.

Gosh! Mediterranean Falafel

Next is Gosh's Mediterranean style falafel. I think it was £1.75 in Lidl. I wasn't too keen on this. It had barely any flavour. Akan liked it, though.

Cauldron Middle Eastern Falafel

Definitey my favourite! It's the closest to the ones I tasted at MiroStreetFood in Berwick Street. The balance of onions and herbs is just right. These are a little pricier at £2.50 in most supermarkets, but the flavour is great. I eat these at home warmed up in the air fryer. The previous two can be heated in the microwave and taste fine that way. I've never tried these in the microwave, but Akan said they don't taste nice in the microwave at all.

Burgers

Aldi Vegan Lemon and Herb No Fish Burger

This was from a while ago and seems to have been discontinued. From what I remember, it had a fishy taste and texture, and the seasoning was right.

These also warm up well in the microwave. They're quite spicy to me, but I have a bland palate. Akan says they're not hot at all. They make a good quick lunch. There is a mix of sweetness from the apricot and heat from the spices. Very nice.

Aldi Spicy No Chicken Burger

I bought these for Akan and gave him one freshly cooked in the oven. He really liked it. He said if he didn't know it was vegan, he'd assume it's just cheap chicken. The second time, I had to precook and then reheat for lunch. He said it tasted even better that way.

Veggie Burgers

Tesco, Morrisons and Aldi all do your good old fashioned breaded veggie burgers. They're pretty similar to me. I think Aldi's is the cheapest, but sometimes the Tesco one is cheaper on Clubcard. Akan, a committed omni, was surprised at how much flavour veggie burgers have, which I thought was funny. I mean, duh!

Every Good Burger Needs a Good Bun

Aldi Vegan Brioche Buns

OH. MY. GOSH.

These are soooooo good! They're soft and fluffy with a rich flavour. Sooooo good. Akan says they taste just as good as non-vegan brioche buns. They're pretty fatty though, 4.3g per bun.

Fingers

Veggie Fingers

Veggie fingers are harder to find these days, apart from the Birdseye one, which is overpriced mid-tier stuff. So far, the only ones I can find on a semi-regular basis are the Aldi ones (but not all branches sell them. Chingford never seems to.). Asda and Tesco used to sell their own brand versions, but they've ditched these for the Birdseye ones, at least in my local branches.

Lidl Plant Based Fingers

I think these are meant to taste of chicken? These aren't the size of veggie fingers, which is what I originally thought. These are two big fingers, the size of mini fish fillets. I think the breaded one was nicer than the potato-coated one.

Croquettes and Nuggets

Iceland Potato Croquettes

As far as I know, these are the only supermarket frozen croquettes that are vegan. I believe the other brands have egg as a binder. They're perfectly fine. They have a decent amount of seasoning and cook well in an oven, grill or air fryer.

iceland croquettes
Morrisons No Chick'n Nuggets

They're quite blah, they barely taste of anything. I won't be buying them again.

morrisons nuggies
Iceland Vegan Crispy Nuggets

These are much better than the Morrisons ones. They have a nice savoury flavour. I can't compare them to real chicken nuggets as I've never tasted them.

These are quite similar to the Iceland ones from what I remember. They also come with two pots of sweet chilli sauce. They have these occasionally during their vegan events. I think they're about £2.

Quorn Crispy Fillet Burger

Techie Uncle really likes these and recommended it to me. They tasted nice, and Akan liked it too. He said he'd give it a 7/10. Unfortunately, I didn't realise till after that it has carageenan. I'm avoiding it as I already have gut issues and don't want to take the risk. But if you're not bothered by it, then it's worth a try.

There's a lot of Quorn stuff I'd like to try, however, they still haven't got with the game and most of the stuff in supermarkets is still not vegan friendly.

Vegan Fish Substitutes

Aldi No Fish Salt and Vinegar Goujons

These have a nice fishy taste and texture. Not much else to say, they taste the way they should!

aldi goujons
Tesco Fish-Free Goujons

These are really nice! Akan says these are easily the best fish-substitute he's ever tasted. He said if I hadn't told him, he'd have thought without a doubt that it was real fish. He said the taste and texture is perfect and Tesco really nailed it with this one.

Pasta and Pizza

Lidl Gnocchi

They had the regular plain gnocchi on the first vegan week. The second time, they also had tomato. I haven't tasted that one. The regular gnocchi was fine. I've never had gnocchi before, so I have nothing to compare it to. I had it with a tomato sauce from Aldi. It was nice anyway.

Lidl Vegan Tortelloni with Tomato and Basil

On first taste, I didn't like it, but after a few mouthfuls, I really started to enjoy it. It cooked really quickly, and had a nice rich, spicy (but not hot) flavour. They also had a meat-alternative version, but I've never liked meat, so I didn't buy it. I tried shopping around to see if anyone else sells something like this, but all I can see are non-vegan options. I hope they get this back in again. I have some left in the freezer, so I'll have it with a sauce next time.

Lidl Vegan Margherita Pizza

They nailed it! The cheeze is so melty and tastes like regular cheese. I added some vegetables to mine, because you gotta, come on. These were reasonably priced as well, £2 I think, or thereabout.

Dr Oetker Vegan Margherita Pomodori

This was a little better than the Lidl one, although at £3.25 in Tesco, I think the Lidl one was better value. I loaded mine with veg as usual, so maybe the difference would have been more obvious without my extra toppings. The tomatoes were nice.

By the way, my ideal pizza toppings are tomato, basil, sweetcorn, mushrooms, sweet pepper, broccoli and carrot. Yes, you did read that right. It's important to parboil the broccoli and carrot first if you're using fresh. As for vegan cheeze, I can take it or leave it. When they get the cheeze right, though, it really elevates it.

Cheeze

Aldi Cheeze

Aldi used to do the best cheddar-style. They had a nice brie style one too. They recently changed their recipe to include carageenan in everything, so I will no longer buy it.

Lidl Cheeze

Their cheddar-style has no flavour, but their feta-style is really nice. According to Akan, they really got the texture right, and the taste is good too. They also have an Italian style, which I haven't tried yet.

Violife Cheeze

Violife is always consistently good. They do blocks, grated and slices. They are close in taste and texture to real cheese. Vegan cheeze is pretty much all empty calories though, so I save these for occasional treats.

Desserts and Sweets

Aldi Vegan Cones

I've had both the strawberry ones and the chocolate ones, and they're both nice. Tastes like normal ice cream. I'm still hoping for a vegan mint cornetto, or even better, mint viennetta, oh my gosh.

aldi ice cream cones
Morrisons Vegan Strawberry Ice Cream

It's okay, I guess. I'm not a big fan of strawberry ice cream, but it was on a multibuy. Their chocolate and vanilla options both have carageenan (so does Lidl's vegan ice cream).

morrisons ice cream

Iceland Vegan Chocolate Ice Cream

I can't remember what the brand was and I can't find it on their site. It didn't have carageenan, and it was nice.

Lidl Vegan Marble Cake

I just don't get why they make these things limited time products. This was so good! Think of all the vegans and those with dairy/egg allergies who would love te be able to pick up a nice cake during their weekly shop, rather than going out their way to find it.

Doughnuts

As far as I know, all the major supermarkets have switched the doughnuts to a vegan recipe EXCEPT Tesco, who still doesn't want any of the vegan doughnut marketshare, it would seem. Asda, Co-op, Sainsbury's and Morrisons all make their core custard and jam doughnuts vegan. Morrisons used to do really nice flavoured chocolate ones, but I haven't seen them in a while. Of all of them, Morrisons is the best for doughnuts. Even their boxed glazed vanilla doughnuts are vegan. Greggs' glazed ring doughnuts are also vegan-friendly. Crosstown is hands down the best, but they're ridiculously expensive.

Lidl Apple Turnovers

A staple of my lunch break. These are really nice and the only vegan dessert in their bakery, as far as I'm aware.

Lidl Vegan Cocoa Hazelnut Spread

Tastes exactly as you'd expect it to. Again, it's only available on vegan week events, so stock up!

lidl spread
Lidl Vegan Coconut Dessert

Another limited time product. It tasted like a weird, glossy coconut yoghurt. I didn't like it. Tiny was happy to finish it off for me.

Chocolate, Sweets and Biscuits

Honestly, the supermarket special vegan chocolates are a bit of a scam. Aldi has a range of vegan bars, but they cost more than the regular dark chocolates, which are already made to a vegan recipe. The vegan ones still have the "may contain traces of dairy", so it's not like you're paying the extra to get an allergen-free bar! Avoid these if you're just aiming for vegan friendly.

Many biscuits are accidentally vegan. Rich tea, Bourbon, oaties and regular digestives usually are. Tesco's dark chocolate digestives are vegan, but I don't think I've seen any other supermarket's ones dairy-free. Nice and shortcake biscuits can be vegan, I think Lidl's are, but Aldi's aren't. It's always worth checking.

I recently found these sweets in Lidl's. A lot of supermarket own brand sweets like bootlaces, cola bottles and fizzy ribbons are vegan.

Well, I think that's it for now. Okay, bye!
