I Finally Did the Squishy Makeovers + Bonus Magnets

These have been on the backburner for literally years. I finally decided to give it a go. I finished these at the end of June but I got lazy and didn't post it. Anyway, these are squishy pen toppers I got for the kids a few years back and now they're worse for wear.

Here are the patients. They have cracks, tears and missing appendages.

damaged squishies

I thought smaller squishies would be easier and also have the added bonus of using less paint, because fabric paint is expensive, and I didn't have much luck with the Scola fabric medium.

I started with sanding down the squishies. I've watched enough Moriah Elizabeth to know how to properly prep!

Then I used UHU power, which dries clear and flexible, to glue back together the tears. Then I sealed in the cracks as best I could with slick paint. I used red, because it's a colour I rarely use. I don't remember a time when I did use it, actually. I wasn't deliberately going for a bloodbath look!

Then I applied a couple of coats of matte white paint.

Next, time to paint. I had a vague idea that I was going to turn the cat burger into an astronaut. I started with this dark metal colour for the helmet, but I changed that later. Looking back, I quite like it, but at the time, it had the wrong vibe.

For the cake, I knew I wanted to go watermelon theme, so I mixed up a nice coral colour for the flesh part, and a pastel turquoise for the rind.

I didn't have a plan for the banana cat. I just put on some of the pastel pink I'd mixed for the other two squishies, thought it looked good, and decided to stick to the pastel theme.

Painting these was a lot harder than I expected. They're little, of course it would be hard! Did I already forget how tricky it was painting the miniature food! The paint job on the cat burger was definitely the worst. I can't remember if I cleaned it up after the photos. I don't even know where these squishies are now, or if I used all the expensive fabric paint for nothing. Oh well. Here's the final result.

I know the seeds are on the wrong place, but I digitally painted the squishy with the pink as the icing and the turquoise as the cake, so that the sprinkles would match as seeds and I didn't like it. Artistic licence. I actually like it this way.

And here are the two magnets that I repainted. They're my mum's from way back in the early 90s. I don't have photos, but the paint had faded and they were this desaturated brown. These have been gathering dust in my room for ages too. So here is their glowup.

They're also now lost, probably by the kids. What was I expecting.

Okay, bye!
