Translator's note: Maya's favourite food in the Japanese release is miso ramen. Takushuu is Shuu Takumi, the series' director.

[Picture text. I think the lines are Phoenix, Edgey, Phoenix, Maya. But I'm not sure. The little writing by Maya's head says "Why?"]
Phoenix: If you're just here to loiter, go home.
Edgeworth: Hm, but I'm thirsty...
Phoenix: This isn't a tea room, you know. Maya, don't you be serving tea, either!
Maya: Nick's stinginess...

Page 26 — Golden Week

Translator's note: Completely re-translated October 2021. The last version was so full of mistakes, I had to redo the whole thing. There are still a couple of bits I'm not sure about. Golden Week is a week-long holiday in Japan.

hamidashi Letters Corner

Last month's issue brought forth several reactions. With attention turning to the launch of "Rise from the Ashes", expectations were getting higher and higher!

• Phoenix, Maya and Edgeworth were in perfect harmony (?) [sic] when Payne interrupted them in the middle of their conversation. Despite suddenly seeing this ordinary middle-aged man, it was my turn to discover Payne-san's charm. Takumi-san, please do your best to take care of your health. (Kazutotoro, Hyougo Prefecture)

Page 24 — First-Years and Rookies

Notes: In the Japanese version, Payne's name is Auchi, which is a play on "Ouch", hence Payne/pain. The puns at the end are "Couch" and "Pouch". Maya's bean comment is referring to the bean throwing festival.

I think I've solved a little of the confusion I was having. I think Edgey's just been looking back through historic cases, and telling them how everything seemed to be disastrous back then, and then the 15 year old case comes up as an example. I think.

• I'm crazy about Suekane-san's wonderful illustrations! (Saika, Tokyo Metropolis)
~ She also drew this issue's cover for us! It's the appearance of the new character, Akane [Ema]!

• It's so funny! I think "Larry-kun" is a really great character. (nas, Mie Prefecture)
~ The story is calmer this issue, but for March and April's issues, things were really crazy! I wonder what will be in the new episode?

Page 18 — Reminiscence 3

Main story translation by Hikari Kaitou, editing and the rest by Silver Arrows.

Hikari's Notes: "Around the time of the Hanami Festival." Flower viewing (hanami) season is a big deal in Japan, where a lot of people make a point to visit parks with flowering trees and hold picnics and drinking parties under their branches.

Takushuu Column — Ace Attorney 3

Hello! Last time and the time before, we looked back on the trilogy, but now we come to the end.

Ace Attorney 3.

Actually, at the point that AA2 was completed, I already had an image of what AA3's final story would be. The final version was completely different, but this time, let's start with that story.

In front of an extravagant hotel, an assassination, seemingly by a professional hitman, takes place. The hitman's name is Koroshiya Sazaemon [Shelly de Killer]. However, 17 years earlier, he was already declared dead. His final moments are revealed, and we learn Sazaemon's true identity... Continue reading

Notes: There was no illustration on this page, but going from the Hamidashi Corner in next month's issue, there appeared to have been a separate illustration by Akiman somewhere. See the next issue for more.

Notes: Maya tries to say "Merry Christmas" in English, but she says it the kana way.

Thanks to Hikari Kaitou for corrections. Thank you to u/Evelinessa for pointing out that the card Franziska was returning was de Killer's card from Gyakuten Saiban 2. Neither Hikari nor I picked up on that!

Takushuu Column — Ace Attorney 2

"Let's get straight to AA3!"

When the producers decided to continue with the series, I was so grateful.

To be honest, at the time we launched AA1, I was kinda half-hearted about a sequel. I couldn't think at all of making anything beyond the first game.

Episode 4 — December 2004 Issue

Takushuu Column — About Ace Attorney

August 2000.

The project called "Detective Line (provisional)" had begun. It would be another 10 months before "Ace Attorney" was complete.

I thought I would never completely forget that densely packed year.

Notes: The old version was like 60-80% incorrect. New version fixed 03/22. Blue Badger is called Taiho-kun (taiho means arrest) in the original Japanese. The one here is called Taiho-don (don means bowl). I've translated it as Blue Bowl.

There's a joke in here about Gumshoe's Japanese surname, which is Itonokogiri. Itonoko (which is also their nickname for him) means a jigsaw (as in the tool) and nokogiri means a saw or musical saw (I didn't even know there were such things).

Page 34 — Rise from the Ashes Launch Celebration!

Notes: In this episode, they go full meta and are talking about the re-release of Gyakuten Saiban 1, which was originally a GBA game. It was re-named Gyakuten Saiban - Yomigaeru Gyakuten (Turnabout Trials - The Resurrected Turnabout) for the DS release (The Resurrected Turnabout is also the Japanese name of the new bonus case, Rise From the Ashes). When they're talking about RftA, they're talking about the whole re-release of GS1. The Japanese release has the ability to play in both English and Japanese, hence why Maya is practising English. I've transcribed the English as it's written in kana, and I kept Phoenix's name as Naruhodou for those parts, and nothing makes sense anymore.

Page 22 — White Day

Translator's notes: White Day is March 14th. It's a chance for males to give a gift to females and return any favours from Valentine's Day. Just like on Valentine's, there are gifts for that special female, and then the obligation gifts, given to friends or as a social courtesy. Typically, sweets, biscuits and marshmallows are given.

In the English release, Maya is fond of burgers, whereas in the Japanese version, her preferred food is miso ramen, hence the ramen extravaganza.

Page 20 — Valentine’s Day

Cultural Notes: In Japan, Valentine's Day is celebrated differently from in the West. On this day, females give chocolate to males. A loved-one will get a special, often home-made, chocolate, a honmei-choko. Not-so-special males will get a giri-choko, an "obligation" chocolate, out of social courtesy or friendship. White Day is the day for males to return the favour to the girls.
