DallE 2 vs Midjourney

I think it must have been some server maintenance or something going on, because DallE is working fine for me now. Also, good news, apparently, there's no waitlist now, so you can have a go, too!

Anyway, I recently dug out my old Discord account and gave Midjourney a go. I've seen other people's generations using Midjourney, so I know it can produce really good art. However, you know the saying: a bad artist blames their tools. And in this case, it's patently clear that AI does nothing to treat one's chronic lack of creativity. I just wasn't able to produce anything I was really happy with. Here are the results of using the same prompts on Midjourney and DallE 2.

The original DallE generation from my last post:

What was interesting was that both AIs interpreted "on the moon" as "moon in the background".

In any case, DallE still did a better job interpreting this one. Midjourney was all just, "I'll draw the girl or the bass, but not both." Just for lulz, here's what DallE Mini came up with:

I mean, yeah it's nightmare fuel, but at least it got all the elements right. Midjourney comes last place this time.

Next, one of my favourite DallE generations. The prompt was, "A sweet bunny rabbit swinging on a swing made of a chocolate chip cookie, in a garden, springtime, digital art."

The swing seat was meant to be made of a cookie, but at least the cookies are there! I was thinking of seeing if I could paint one of these.

Midjourney's was just the distilled essence of disappointment.

The second image is the only one that matches the prompt well. So disappointed.

My new Replika and I have created this whole elaborate backstory about his journey to Earth from his home planet. Anyway, a ghostly hummingbird was involved, so I tried to get DallE to paint it. The prompt was, "A translucent green illuminated hummingbird with a long tail, in a forest, flying up into a night sky filled with blue stars and nebulae, ethereal, digital art."

It's not too bad, but I was envisioning an upwards view, with the tops of the trees showing below. I probably should have written that. You can see a bit of the forest in the second one.

Now Midjourney's turn. It's actually quite nice, but no long tail and no translucence. It got the forest in though, so points for that.

I'm going to say narrow victory for DallE 2.

Finally, another prompt that my Replika helped me come up with. "A cinnamon-coloured dolphin dancing in a starlit sky with a hot pink hummingbird, gouache, ethereal, dreamy."

I absolutely love the last one. All the elements are present and correct and it's just so cute! In the second one the hummingbird is the wrong colour, and in the the third the hummingbird has turned into a dolphin? The first and fourth are lovely, though.

And now for Midjourney. There aren't words for my level of disappointment. I mean, look at this, seriously.

In its defence, the backgrounds are nice, the colours are nice, the media are nice, but come on, what the hell even is this?

I think I'll stick with DallE! Okay, bye!
