Part of Your World — Kansai-ben version 関西弁

This is the 1997 version. Changes are highlighted in mermaid turquoise. I wasn't happy about removing the ね from the first line, because it takes it further away from the English "isn't it neat?", but more than that, I wanted to keep the rhyme, so change it did. Disclaimer: I'm not a native speaker, nor fluent in Japanese in any sense of the word.

Page 40 — New Year’s

This page involved a lot of word play, which I found hard to convert to English. The game they are playing is "Old Maid". In Japanese, it's called Babanuki, which is written ババ抜き and means something like "extract/pull out the old maid". This is the reason for Gumshoe's logic for why he is the winner.

Gumshoe's concept for the year is "念には念を" which means something like "be doubly sure", and I translated more figuratively as "always be prepared". The character used, 念, is read "nen", and pops up later when Pearl tries to recite her proverb.

Gumshoe also makes a play on the phrase "sore loser". In Japanese, the word is 負けず嫌い (makezu girai) which literally means something like "without losing, hates". When Phoenix calls him this, Gumshoe then uses a word play on 食わず嫌い (kuwazu girai), which means a person who hates a food that they've never even tasted ("without eating, hates").

Pearl is trying to use a Japanese proverb 馬の耳に念仏 (uma no mimi ni nenbutsu), which means "reading the nenbutsu (prayer) into a horse's ear", equivalent to the English, "It's like talking to a brick wall". However instead she says 馬の耳に . . . てんねんきねんぶつ which means "into the horse's ear, protected species/natural monument". I tried my best to come up with a similar wordplay in English that also includes Gummi's earlier 念 (preparation), but it feels a little awkward!

"Happy New Year" in Japanese is written 賀正 (gashou). Gumshoe writes the first character in kana (が正), possibly because the first character is harder to write (although he should be able to).

Page 12 — Autumn of..?

Translator's Notes: Larry uses the word yomikaki which means reading and writing, as in having the skill. Maya then uses the word dokusho, which I think means just reading in general. I translated it as "literature" to make Larry's next line work, even though it's not an accurate translation. I am also stumped at Maya suddenly bringing up Nagoya out of nowhere. Larry has a very casual, rough way of speaking that I'm just not familiar with, so there is a lot of guesswork on his lines.

Page 10 — Festival

I am finally back working on this project! Thank you to Yuki-san for helping me when I got stuck. The end is finally in sight! Takumi-san uses the phrase "ato no matsuri" (the festival after?), and then at the end, Maya says "matsuri no ato" (after the festival), and I don't really know what they're getting at. The original title of this page is Matsuri. You can read more about matsuri here. Hamidashi means something like, "sticking out", "overflow". Pearl's Japanese name is Harumi, Hami-chan for short, so they got her character to answer the reader comments in the puntastically named Hamidashi Letters Corner. Turnabout Trials is the literal translation of Gyakuten Saiban. I had to use that version to make Phoenix's observation work.

Japanese Cheat Sheet: When to Use が and When to Use は — Super Simple

The easiest way to know which to use is to determine, is the new or significant information before or after the particle?

Let’s take as an example: “I like strawberries”. Do you use 苺が好きや or 苺は好きや? Let’s ignore first the misconception that 好き always uses が (it’s not true!). Which we use depends on the context, ie what comes before.

Let’s take the scenario:

You’re in the fruit aisle in a supermarket with your friend. She asks: 何が好き? What do you like?

In this case we reply with: 苺が好きや. I like strawberries.

The new information is before the particle, ie we are already discussing what you like, so that’s not new. The new information is “strawberries”.

So if the new or most important information comes before the particle, the particle you need is が.

What if your friend says instead: 苺あるわ。They have strawberries.

Your response would be: 苺は好きや! I like strawberries!

And this time we use は, because we have already brought up the topic of strawberries. The new information is that you like them, and that comes after the particle. So in this case, you use は.

To summarise:

  • New information before the particle → use が
  • New information after the particle → use は

The same applies to deciding whether to use を or は:

  • New information before the particle → use を
  • New information after the particle → use は

Censorship, ClassicPress and Incomplete Projects

I'm getting there. I've carried over almost everything worth carrying over. It's been a long journey, but I think it was worth it. Why didn't I just import my WP backup, I hear you ask? Because as I said, my old blog was a hot mess. I had a lot of pointless posts left over from my Sims fansite days. My KI Rabid Fangirl days can be really annoying even to me. Many entries needed cleaning up and updating. I got lazy with my <p> tags from about 2013 onwards. The amount of tags I used was crazy stupid. Plus with all my images being hosted either on WP itself, or even worse, Photobucket, I wanted to get all my images in the one place and in a portable format, because I don't want to be on Blogger forever. Like I said, Blogger is an inferior platform compared to WP at its best.

One thing I will say in WP.com's defence is that they never censored me. I'm pretty sure that back in my Torrent Queen days, T$R made at least one attempt to get my blog closed. Blogger has banned my post on why I Continue reading →

The Superstar Sindy Box

Let's see how good my memory was. I managed to find some pictures of the packaging for Superstar Sindy. There are two sizes, and I seem to remember having the larger one. I downloaded these several months ago, and unfortunately I can't find the original images, nor does TinEye show any matches. So my apologies to the original photographers. If I do find out where I got them, I will credit you appropriately.

Here's my original memory:

My mum also threw away the original packaging for my Superstar Sindy. I used to keep it under my pillow and look at it every night before I went to sleep. There were photos of the other dolls in the range, and they had such cool 80s fashion. I think one had glass-style boots. I totally wanted that one.

So, let the healing begin!
