New WordPress Editor Sucks

They've done an Australis on us. I thought it was just my browser being all buggy as usual (Palemoon doesn't seem to like me much, but I'd rather soldier on with it than go back to the crummy FF29 or whatever crappy version they use now with its crappy interface).

Anyway, WordPress now officially SUCKS too. Yeah I know I whinge every time they bring in an update. I remember how much I disliked the changes they made way back in 2004 (or sometime thereabouts. You old timers will know what I mean). But as much I disliked the change initially, at least the ruddy thing WORKED.

Now if I notice a typo and want to be able to quickly change it by clicking the edit button on the actual post I'm sent to this load of crap:

wp-beepboop

And that's all it does. I'm not willing to wait another 10 minutes to see if anything happens. I said I wanted to edit my post, not look at some dancing dots until I fall asleep!

But it turns out it's not my browser throwing a tantrum. It's just WordPress doing their Mozilla impression.

Firefox 29 sucks

What the hell were Mozilla thinking? I've always preferred Firefox as my browser. I loved its user interface, its flexibility, its general user-friendliness.

I was originally a Mozilla girl (yes, there was a browser suite called Mozilla, before they split it up into Firefox and Thunderbird). And the move to Firefox was painless. In fact, it was pleasant, after we'd moved over to Windoze XP and the browser on that OS didn't crash every time I typed into a text box (up until then, I still had to use Mozilla).

But 29? WTH? It's like a different browser! It sucks! Even the workaround for replacing tabs in their original place (duh, Mozilla, they go at the bottom!) was removed and now needs an addon. The addon bar has been done away with, again, needing another addon to be installed. The Home button can't be moved back to between the forward button and the URL box. Why?? The back and forward buttons and the URL box are separate entities, or at least they used to be up to v28.

Even with the addons to try to restore the look and feel of my old Firefox 28, it still looks and feels lame.

Man, seriously, I thought removing the status bar back in version [insert version number here] was bad, but this is just ridiculous.

Skype installs malware toolbars

You were very fortunate to get an older version of the Babylon virus. The newer "improved" version installs a totally separate, disguised and totally unidentified program titled Browser Manager. While that is still on the hard drive, about:config resets will not work, as the last Babylon file, of 30 total Babylon files, cannot be reset, not by you and not even by Mozilla. When FFX restarts, this program re-installs Babylon, and you never knew it was there. — jaguar6cy

Please watch out when installing Skype! It seems the current installer is bundled with a malicious toolbar called Delta, which from what I've seen, seems to be by the same malware-factory that created the ebil Babylon toolbar.

What is sneaky about these installers (and I'm including the just-as-evil CNET malware installer here) is that, just like SecuROM, Continue reading

Archos 18b Vision Review

I had been searching ages for a cheap and cheerful MP3 player that also had video playback. I really only got this for podcasting Dr Karl, since I can't stay up that late anymore. Anyway, on to the review.

I was expecting great things from this after seeing all the positive reviews, but alas, I was to be disappointed.

Firstly, it has an annoying habit of cutting out the first second or two of each track. This is because whoever programmed the software likes fade-in. And no, there isn't an option to turn this off. The result of this is that the first words of the podcast are cut out. True, I'm not missing out on much, but there was really no reason for this function, and besides, it's annoying. You see, we are already getting off to a bad start.

Second problem: Continue reading

Asus 1225b EeePC Review

asus

The first thing you need to know about the 1225b is that it is slow. Really slow. This may be the fault of Windows 7, but don't believe its claim that:

The latest AMD Brazos dual core processor provides users an unprecedented experience of the all new Accelerated Processing Unit (APU). The APU combines a high performance CPU and discrete GPU giving users the best in multimedia enjoyment.

It's slow.

Okay, bloatware uninstalled, cleaned up with CCleaner. Here's some of the software I use and how the 1225b handles them.

Oh No! SecuROM is Back!!

Damn you, EA! Damn you!!

stoopid suck-u-rom... its back

GRRRRRRRR!!! Why does no one listen to me when I say, check if it has SecuROM!!! Now I gotta wait for techie Uncle to come round and remove it cos I'm sure I'll screw up somewhere. Or maybe I won't bother waiting that long and give it a try anyway.

Here's the quick way to see if your game is infected. Look at the back of the CD. I've even provided a picture for you.

Somewhere where I've shown you, in little writing, you will see the words SONY DADC. This is sekrit code for: Ha ha, l00zers!! U iz pirate! Nao all ur PC r belong to us!!

Update

Utterly brilliant! It's gone!

stoopid suckurom

That was easier than I thought! There's a non-techie way! Whew!

ETA: It looks like it might not have been a game that was responsible after all. I've discovered that (my sister's) Official DSA Theory Test (i.e. the driving theory test) CD has the Sony DADC thing on it too, but most of the stuff mentioned in the MATY thread (e.g. securom folder in your settings folder, the uaservice7.exe thing) weren't present. So maybe it was a less aggressive form of Suck-u-ROM? Still Suck-u-ROM though. Cool, so now even government owned institutions are trying to take over our PCs.

*thinks for a while*

... actually there's nothing surprising about that at all.

ETA Part II : Actually I think it was my sister's Castaway after all

ETA Part IV: It was both.
