Craft Projects Update

Here are some things I’ve been working on (notably, here are some things I’m not working on: the mini dollshouse, Dreamsong chapter 6, Prescience).

A new baby, a new baby record book. I’ve run out of ideas for cover designs. All the kids have fruit nicknames. Tiny chose Kiwi Fruit for the new one, so I went with a green theme. I painted some kraft paper with gold kids’ paint mixed with copper to tone it down.

Keenopoly

The Chipmunk used to be mad about Commander Keen and Monopoly. So I made a Keen-themed Monopoly game, don’t sue me, Hasbro.

The Chipmunk is absolutely ruthless with Monopoly. He won’t even let me forfeit if I’m on the way to bankruptcy. He has to claw Mayfair out of my cold, dead hands. Although when he (very rarely) loses, he’ll throw a tantrum. Hm. His sister is the opposite. If I’m about to be bankrupted in Junior Monopoly, she’ll waive the rent, or give me money, while holding back the tears! It’s so cute! Poor thing.

Origami Flowers

I made some origami flowers using the instructions from origami-instructions.com (note: this website is covered with ads). I made a trial flower with newspaper first, and it wasn’t hard actually.. Here’s what I made.

I used copy paper, and painted both sides with diluted acrylic. I didn’t really put enough thought into it. I was trying to go for a graduated look. The way to do it is how it’s done on the yellow one. A diagonal stripe down the middle. I then coated them with diluted PVA. To flatten them, I placed them in punched pockets and left them overnight sandwiched in a heavy book on a packed bookshelf.

My Scrapbook

Here are some pages from my scrapbook. Originally, this was going to be a gift for someone. It's a good thing I didn't give it to them in the end, because it probably would have just ended up being given to their boss. Or stolen by a flatmate, because that is how this so-called friend treated not only my gifts, but my actual in fact property that they were only borrowing. I'm not bitter. What makes you think that? Sigh.

Anyway, enough whining. Let's look at the scrapbook!

This card I got solely because I loved the illustration. I'm a total sucker for pictures of the moon. I think it comes down to this book I read when I was about 14. It had a lot of moon imagery in it, and I think it was the first fiction book that made me cry. No, I'm not telling you what it's called.

Fimo RoboRed from Commander Keen

The Chipmunk is crazy about Commander Keen, especially RoboRed. PROTIP: the (unofficical) sequel trilogy, "The Universe is Toast!" has been around for some time now: Episode 7, Episode 8, Episode 9 (all download links are on the right-hand sidebar). We're on episode 8 at the moment, and it's up there with the official releases in terms of quality.

Anyway, I decided to make Chipmunk a RoboRed of his own. I toyed with using salt-dough, so I could make a large scale one, or even attempt to make a plushie, but discovering I still have some red Fimo leftover, I went for that. And yes, being about 10 years old now, it did need reconditioning.

New DIY Mini Dollshouse Project

Ohhh, you remember my paper maché monstrosity, don't you? Well, this is not a repeat of that. I'm sticking with the smaller scale. I started by mocking this up in The Sims 2. Fun fact: the in-game screenshot function no longer works, so I now have to use printscreen and tab out. Oh, EA, how I love you! I went for a tiny-home. In real life, I'm really starting to feel inclined towards living in a tiny home. Not that it will ever happen, because prisoner, gilded cage, etc. But I have to dream to keep myself sane.

Here is my mock-up:

What is This Book? (Re)Create This Book Pt 1

I'm a big fan of Moriah Elizabeth's channel, and I really admire how creative she is. Like, how the heck does she come up with all those ideas? I have a lot of imagination, but very little creativity. I just find it such a struggle to come up with anything original and interesting. Anyway, watching her Create This Book series, I was tempted to buy a copy of one of them, but now that I've lost my job (thanks, Mophead McLiarface), I can't really justify spending £12 on something that I lack the creativity to even do a good job with. So, I went kinda cheeky and copied out some of the prompts I liked in an old notebook I bought years ago and never knew what to do with. I'm planning on using some free prompts from the interwebz as well.

Create Your Own Trading Card Game

The kids have been getting super frustrated during lockdown, and tantrums and general bad behaviour are on the increase. So here's an idea I thought of to encourage good behaviour, and give me something to occupy my time too.

It all started with The Missing Luke Skywalker Trading Card. I had one of these when I was about 14 or 15. I may have kept it in my Sonic the Hedgehog ringbinder, and it may not be there anymore, and I may be really sad about that.

So to cut a long story short, I decided that since I'll probably never find The Missing Luke Skywalker Trading Card, why not just make my own? In fact, why not just make my own series and hope Disney doesn't sue me for everything I have?

Just bear in mind, unless you're using either your own photos/images or images you have permission to freely distribute, these need to be for personal use only. No sharing among school-friends or the kids on the street. Hence I will not be uploading the files, but I will tell you an easy and cheap way to make your own!

Trying Out Acrylic Pouring

Since I'd run out of craft projects and had 3 canvasses gathering dust, I decided now was the time to try this out!

paint pouring

You will need:

  • Acrylic paint, in 3-4 colours of your choice. Try to choose colours that will look good together. Sometimes you think colours go well together and then when you try it out, they don't. I learnt this from experience.
  • Water. Distilled is best, but I used tap water and it was fine
  • Small cups or bowls
  • A blank pre-primed canvas. It might be a good idea to start with a small canvas the first time
  • Glitter or gold leaf. Optional, but adds a nice touch.
  • Stirring sticks
  • Old newspaper, plastic sheeting or anything else to catch the mess. There probably will be a lot of mess
  • Cocktail stick or toothpick, to help create feathering patterns. Optional
  • Rubber gloves. Optional, but recommended
  • Something sturdy to hold up your canvas while drying. I used my paint bottles
  • A desk fan. Optional, but greatly speeds up drying time

DIY Dollshouse Kit No.4: Elegant Times 2020

I think that's what it's called. So here we go, and I finally got to do my red and black theme!

Happy Time Dollshouse Kit

The decor on this was absolutely hideous. I can't even describe how awful the master bedroom wallpaper was. It had to go.

One thing to bear in mind about this one is that it is wider than the other three, so I had to get the one with the dust cover, as it had to go on the top of the display shelves. Otherwise Biscuit would have quickly done some "redecoration" of his own.

This one seemed to be from the same manufacturer as my first dollshouse (Elegant Times 2018?), but there has been an improvement. You actually get a sheet with all the pieces mapped out so you can easily see which piece is which.

Painting on Fabric with LIT Paint!

As I said in a previous post, you CAN use LIT on fabric. Previously, I used LIT mixed in with Tulip Fashion Glitter Bond, which I piled over dried fabric paint. While it worked, it didn't look very attractive, appearing very lumpy and just amateurish in general. This time, I tried LIT mixed in with the Tulip Glow fabric paints, and the result looks super good! It has a very painterly look, quite like watercolour at times.

I used LIT in the four available colours: original green, blue, pink and yellow; plus Tulip Glow fabric paint in pink, blue and yellow. Plus various Tulip Slick paints in neon.

So for my first experiment, I mixed up some Pink LIT with pink glow paint, and this time I used a regular paintbrush. So far, so good! The fabric did absorb quite a lot of paint (do make sure to place at least 1 layer of card inside the t-shirt. It's touch-dry within about 10 minutes, I think. I didn't time it, but it really wasn't long.
