Scamazon, Anosmia and Words Nearly Everyone Gets Wrong

Let’s see if g00gle even allows me to post this… It’s been well over a year since I last bought anything off Scamazon (the last time was December 2020), and I don’t miss it one bit. I’ve been on a tight budget recently, so I’ve had to limit my spending a lot, but for those things I needed to buy online, I never even bothered to look on Scamazon, except occasionally for reviews, and then I’d buy it elsewhere (usually eBay). When my radiator broke down in the middle of a cold snap, I ordinarily would have gone straight to Scamazon, but this time I ordered it from Curry’s and it arrived the next morning with no delivery charge! Maybe it would have been cheaper on Scamazon, I don’t know. But I’m glad I didn’t even look.

Craft Projects Update

Here are some things I’ve been working on (notably, here are some things I’m not working on: the mini dollshouse, Dreamsong chapter 6, Prescience).

A new baby, a new baby record book. I’ve run out of ideas for cover designs. All the kids have fruit nicknames. Tiny chose Kiwi Fruit for the new one, so I went with a green theme. I painted some kraft paper with gold kids’ paint mixed with copper to tone it down.

Keenopoly

The Chipmunk used to be mad about Commander Keen and Monopoly. So I made a Keen-themed Monopoly game, don’t sue me, Hasbro.

The Chipmunk is absolutely ruthless with Monopoly. He won’t even let me forfeit if I’m on the way to bankruptcy. He has to claw Mayfair out of my cold, dead hands. Although when he (very rarely) loses, he’ll throw a tantrum. Hm. His sister is the opposite. If I’m about to be bankrupted in Junior Monopoly, she’ll waive the rent, or give me money, while holding back the tears! It’s so cute! Poor thing.

Origami Flowers

I made some origami flowers using the instructions from origami-instructions.com (note: this website is covered with ads). I made a trial flower with newspaper first, and it wasn’t hard actually.. Here’s what I made.

I used copy paper, and painted both sides with diluted acrylic. I didn’t really put enough thought into it. I was trying to go for a graduated look. The way to do it is how it’s done on the yellow one. A diagonal stripe down the middle. I then coated them with diluted PVA. To flatten them, I placed them in punched pockets and left them overnight sandwiched in a heavy book on a packed bookshelf.

The Flaws of Kurain

Kurain is an idiocracy anyway, but that’s not what I’m ranting about today. The whole spirit-chanelling thing just doesn’t make sense in-universe.

In the real world, we can dismiss mediums as a bunch of scam artists, but in the Ace Attorney universe, it’s genuine. They would 100% have won James Randi’s $1,000,000. I mean, they literally shapeshift for all to see. There’s no way to dismiss them as frauds. And it’s not like it’s a secret. We know from the Dr Grey case that the Feys take clients, and spirit channeling is their job. We also know the cops hired Misty years back. Mia frequently appears in court post-death and Franziska literally shows the court a photo of Maya transformed into Mia.

Funny You Should Mention That

I just did a post about this the other day. Metro has finally caught on. The thing is, I’ve seen several promotions of “made from recycled plastic bottles” clothing in their paper, as though it’s an eco-friendly choice. Meh. And this is the same Nicole Mowbray who promoted cow dairy over plant-based alternatives and came up with the dumb name of “filk”. Anyway, I’m glad they’ve caught on, but let’s see how long before I see another “gymwear made from recycled plastic ” feature in their lifestyle pages.

I’m confused about receipts, because a few years ago when I first heard of BPA being used in receipts, I asked the lady from head office if we used BPA or BPS in our receipts, and she said we didn’t, and its use in receipts was banned under EU law. She didn’t say anything about BPS, but who knows? Maybe regaining our right to poison our retail staff with day-long contact with BPA is a BREXIT BENEFIT™!

I Wish Companies Would Stop Pretending Clothing Made From Recycled Plastic Is Eco-Friendly

Do you know what one of the biggest causes of micro-plastic in the ocean is? It’s shedding from synthetic fibres. I’m so fed up of seeing brands promoting their “recycled from plastic bottles! Saving the ocean one bottle at a time!” policy as something good.

All you’re doing is replacing large bits of plastic with tiny bits that will be ingested and inhaled by all sea creatures.

Asda Doughnuts are Now Vegan!

I only found out a couple of days ago that Asda doughnuts are now vegan-friendly! It’s been literally a year — yes, over a whole year, in fact — since I ate a doughnut. It was the two Crosstown ones that I bought with the £10 that they gave us instead of the Christmas dinner. A few weeks later we shut up shop for good, and so my steady supply of dougnuts came to an end. Those doughnuts cost £4.50 each, but my gosh, they were good. I would never buy them myself, though. Sometimes we’d get the leftovers. Good times.

Someone Got Inspired: The Treasure Seekers

I love The Treasure Seekers. It’s as Clarice Bean says, when you read a really good book, you just want to read it all over again, and I did with this book. I reread it so many times in a row. Anyway, I found another copycat illustration. And it makes sense now, because this cover’s scene isn’t featured in The Treasure Seekers. But it is featured in New Treasure Seekers, in the chapter “Richard’s Revenge”, which is where the line drawing is from. Although both illustrators made a mistake. Dora wasn’t in on it. There should have been the four boys, plus Alice. See? When you copy someone’s work, you copy their mistakes, too!

Anyway, the original line illustration is by Gordon Browne and Lewis Baumer. I don’t know if either of those were the artist for the colour illustration, but something tells me not. The publisher, Parragon (who got the best English translation for Pinocchio by the way), doesn’t credit their artists.

Still Replaying the OT, and the Gyakuten Saiban Anime

I recently remembered that there’s a Gyakuten Saiban anime, so I decided to watch it. I saw a few clips of the English dub and wasn’t too happy with the voice cast, so I went with the subbed version. I don’t like Edgey’s voice. I know it’s supposed to be deep, but it sounds the wrong kind of deep. I dunno. It just doesn’t sound right. Maybe his English voice is better. Maya was a bit too high-pitched for my liking, but it’s kinda an occupational hazard for anime, isn’t it? I seem to remember her voice being better in the Layton vs Phoenix Wright trailer. Anyway, I’m only up to the second episode. So here’s what I think so far.

One thing that bugged me is that Naruhodo-kun (Phoenix) kept calling Chihiro (Mia) “Chihiro-san”, which he didn’t do in the game. He called her “shochou”, or, in the English release, “Chief”. I don’t know if they made the same mistake in the English dub. They also couldn’t make their mind up about Mia’s age. She literally aged down a year in one second, even though she was dead!
